2 common tax scams you should know

On Behalf of | Jun 10, 2022 | Tax Audit

If you have ever received a phone call from the so-called IRS claiming that you owe money and must pay right away or face severe consequences, you have been impacted by a tax scam.

Unfortunately, tax scams are more common today than ever before. Because of this, you need to be aware of some of the most common scams used to ensure you don’t become a victim.

Phishing emails

A phishing email is when a scammer creates email correspondence to resemble something that would be sent from a tax professional or even the IRS. The “official” nature and look of these emails convince some people they are real.

Unfortunately, if you reply or provide personal information in any way, the scammers will have what they need to steal your identity, steal bank information or use the information for some other nefarious purpose.

Phone calls

As mentioned above, phone calls are another common way for scammers to get personal information and even payments from unsuspecting people. If you receive a phone call and personal information is requested or if you are required to make a payment with a wire transfer, gift card, or prepaid debit card, there’s a good chance this is a scam.

Avoid becoming a victim of a tax scam

Tax scams can happen to anyone at any time. Because of this, it is best to make sure that you don’t provide personal information over the phone.

If you aren’t sure if something is a scam or not, hang up the call and contact the IRS directly. They will be able to let you know if there are any tax issues that you need to handle. It’s also smart to report the incident to help prevent issues for others.
